Who are we?

True Peace Toronto is a group of mindfulness practitioners who meet to practice and learn mindfulness together. Our practice is based on the Zen Buddhist teachings of the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh. We come from a variety of backgrounds and religious traditions.


Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and with what you are doing.


In practicing together as a Sangha, as a community, our practice of mindfulness becomes more joyful, relaxed and steady. We are bells of mindfulness for each other, supporting and reminding each other along the path of practice. With the support of the community, we can practice to cultivate peace and joy within and around us, as a gift for all of those we love and care for. We can cultivate our solidity and freedom - solid in our deepest aspiration and free from our fears, misunderstandings and our suffering.

Where and When do we meet?


We meet Mondays from 5:30 - 7:30 PM at the Multi-faith Centre at the University of Toronto, in the Main Activity Hall on the 2nd floor. Click here for information about our meditation sessions. Click here for directions. We meet all year, except for days when the university is closed (holidays and university breaks).



We also meet Fridays from 6:45 - 8:45 PM at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (MNJCC) at Bloor St. and Spadina Ave. Please check with the MNJCC reception desk for the room number, as it sometimes changes. Click here for information about our meditation sessions. Click here for directions. Sessions are guided. All are welcome. No experience necessary. Free of charge (donations welcome).


Please arrive a few minutes early to give yourself time to settle in.

A mindfulness meditation retreat in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh with dharma teacher Joanne Friday

We are delighted and very fortunate that dharma teacher Joanne
Friday ( has agreed to offer a 5 day retreat for True Peace Sangha again this year. Joanne is an experienced and inspiring lay dharma teacher in the Order of Interbeing, the lineage of our teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. Our sangha has enjoyed retreats with her for a number of years, and her deep practice and joyful presence has benefitted so many who attended. Joanne has been teaching in this tradition since 2003, when she received the Lamp Transmission from Thich Nhat Hanh, her teacher for twenty years.

This retreat will be from dinnertime on
Friday, April 6, 2018 until after lunch on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Five days to settle into ourselves, deepen our practice, water positive seeds and heal our difficulties. It will be held at the beautiful Sugar Ridge Retreat Centre ( on 150 acres near Midland, ON about 1.5 hours north of Toronto. Space will be limited to 35 participants.

The retreat will include sitting meditation, outdoor walking meditation, eating meditation, deep relaxation, working meditation, dharma sharing and daily dharma talks by Joanne.

Location: Sugar Ridge Retreat Centre, Midland, Ontario

$500 before
March 3, $550 after March 2nd.

The cost includes accommodation and food. Limited scholarships will be available for students and low income. Ride-sharing will be arranged.


Deadline for registration is March 30.

Please note that this cost does not include dana for Joanne Friday. Joanne shares her knowledge and experience of the teachings with us freely and generously in the spirit of compassion, and receives no compensation for her offering. She is a full-time dharma teacher and relies on donations (dana) for her income. A donation box will be available at the retreat to make an offering to Joanne. When we offer dana we give generously yet within our means, in the spirit of interbeing and reflecting on the value of the precious gift we have been offered in the transmission of these teachings.

2. Fill out the online Retreat Information Form available at the following link: (if you experience difficulty with this link please try cutting and pasting into your browser or try a different device)

3. Attach your cheque for payment (payable to True Peace Sangha) to your completed Retreat Registration Form and mail to the retreat registrar (address is on the registration form at the end of the registration package). Please mail in your registration as we will not be accepting registrations at sangha.

Day of Mindfulness, 27 January 2018

Join us on Saturday 27 January, 2018 for a Day of Mindfulness at the Multi-Faith Centre. We will start at 10 am and finish at 4 pm. Activities will include sitting and walking meditation, deep relaxation, and mindful movement and stretching. We'll watch a video of a dharma talk by Thich Nhat Hanh and have a Question and Answer session, along with some dharma sharing. A suggested donation of $10 would help with the cost of the room but give what you can manage. Your most important contribution is always your presence.
Please bring your own bagged vegetarian lunch and a cup for tea. You might like to bring a blanket for deep relaxation.

Annual Retreat with Blue Cliff Monastics

The annual Toronto retreat with Blue Cliff monastics will take place from May 4 to 6, 2018 at Camp Samac, 275 Conlin Rd E, Oshawa, Ontario. More details to follow.

Namo Avalokiteshvara Chant

On Monday September 25th, True Peace Sangha Toronto did a sing-along/chant-along of Namo Avalokiteshvara (have compassion on me, listen to my sufferings, have compassion on those loved ones around me, listen to their sufferings, have compassion in the world, listen to all suffering) together, sending Mettā (benevolence, loving-kindness) to all beings including those impacted by the events in Myanmar.
